ABOUT ME

Carrie Kellenberger Fibromyalgia Patient Leader for HealthlineHi! I’m Carrie. I’m a Canadian living in Taiwan with Ankylosing Spondylitis, Fibromyalgia, and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (MECFS), among other health issues.

When I first started MSW in 2007, I wrote a lot about living abroad and my travels in Asia. This site has never veered from its main mission statement which is to travel and learn about Asia with me.

I’ve been writing about chronic illness since 2009. MSW provides information for other chronically ill patients, patient support, and I engage in patient advocacy across many platforms.

If you’ve found my site content helpful, please consider buying me a coffee through the link above. Your kind and generous donation is used towards site maintenance fees ($120/yr) and my medical bills which are over $1,200US a month.

My illnesses have shaped my worlds and have inspired me to support other patients. Please help me make a difference in the lives of other patients.

BODY POSITIVE POST and some 🔥 for winter: I'm BODY POSITIVE POST and some 🔥 for winter:

I'm on the cusp of being on the closer side of 50. I will never have another chance to post a photo like this! Who knows what another 10-year challenge will look like? 45 to 55 coming up!

Abled vs. Disabled

LEFT: 35 years old. I was still running a bit and doing weights and yoga, but not much. That stopped within one year. By this point, I was a year into my official diagnosis and had entered remission after a horrible year spent mostly in a wheelchair or using a cane. This was the beginning of the end with physical activity for me. IBS was ramping up. And MECFS/FM was starting to dig its claws in. I don't remember a single day without excruciating pain after this and it still feels like I am walking and standing on glass.

RIGHT: 45 years old. This summer I learned that I am grateful for my body. It's still going despite everything. You can't tell how sick I am or that my body will not carry me past 3,000 steps a day without severe consequences.

I don't know what I'll look like at age 55 or if I'll even be able to stand in another 10 years, but something tells me that this body is not ready to give up yet. Aging is a beautiful thing.

I'm celebrating that my body is still going, my brain is sharp as a knife, and that my choice in swimwear and sun hats hasn't changed much.

Chronically yours,
Carrie

I've stopped. I'll only lend to two friends now because most people do not take care of my books or bother to return them!

Last night I discovered that half my Lisa See collection is missing! *sad face*

I'm missing Dreams of Joy, Shanghai Girls, China Dolls and The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane.

I hope whomever has them is enjoying them and returns them soon!

Highly recommend these four if you haven't read them yet!

I responded to one of her posts to say that when it is safe to fly, I wish with all my heart that I can meet her and say thank you for so many wonderful tales. She kindly offered to send me some bookplates to tide me over, and here is one of them! And now I have a signed autograph from one of my favorite authors!

Unnatural Causes: The Life and Many Deaths of Brit Unnatural Causes: The Life and Many Deaths of Britain's Top Forensic Pathologist was the my first non fiction read in 2021. Dr. Richard Shepherd has spent his life learning about death.

This is a collection of case stories that he reflected on while suffering a break from PTSD as a result of witnessing man's inhumanity towards man for decades of his life. A fascinating read that I will refer back to.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I am no stranger to joy. I know that joy can be truly experienced only by those who have known adversity. And adversity is an inevitability.”― Richard Shepherd, Unnatural Causes

“My PTSD is not caused by any particular one of the 23,000 bodies on which I have performed post-mortems. And it is not caused by all of them. It is not caused by any particular disaster I have been involved in clearing up. And it is not caused by all of them. It is caused, in its entirety, by a lifetime of bearing first-hand witness to, on behalf of everyone–courts, relatives, public, society–man’s inhumanity to man.” ― Richard Shepherd, Unnatural Causes

Chronic truths. SWIPE to see my real life Never-En Chronic truths. SWIPE to see my real life Never-Ending Story. This is one of three binders. The color tabs mark different meds and ER incidents from 13 years of severe and disabling illness.

You'd think with a story like this that I'd have access to the meds I need. But that story is not finished because I was denied during my first petition process in Taiwan for coverage for Enbrel.

There are three reasons:

1. I could not provide enough visual proof of my invisible arthritis despite 13 years of labs and carefully documented notes showing inflammation and illness. Doctor observations, x-rays, and MRIs showing inflammation from six hospitals were ignored.

2. I failed the first two blood tests. 1.8 and 4.99 off meds. I needed to hit 1.0 off meds and I did. I got very sick.

The third test was an unexpected test and I injected the day before. My labs came back at .98 of the govt criteria of 1.0. Can you believe it?

3. The diagnostic criteria for AS are out of date in Taiwan.

Sadly, this story continues. I need this med. It is literally keeping me on my feet. But I am breaking trying to pay for it on my own. My meds are more than my rent. The reality of looking towards my future and seeing mounds of debt is settling in quickly.

Sadly, this story is the same story that so many of us have to live as reality.

Keep. On. Going.

It can be hard to live in the present when you have illness or things or people in your life that won't allow you to do that.

I try hard to avoid appointments during the last w I try hard to avoid appointments during the last week of each year because it is stress piled on top of stress. This year was bad timing for everyone I know.

Tomorrow morning I find out if I qualified for coverage for my arthritis meds via Taiwan's outdated diagnostic criteria for inflammatory arthritis. I'm spending $30,000 a month - more than my rent. I really need this win and I have not had a good December. I'm so nervous.

I'm trying to stay 'pawsitive' with pet therapy but I don't know how I'll be feeling tomorrow. It's either going to be a really good day or a really bad day based on what they tell me and I hate that I am entering a new year like this.

Just the truth. I have nothing wise or entertaining to say. I'm actually just incredibly sad and when I started this account, I said I would post it all.

A reminder that #ItsOKToNotBeOK

Back to book posts soon. Happy New Year, everyone.
