“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that, that’s what life is: You might be really good. you might find something out about yourself that’s really special. And if you’re not good, who cares? You’ve tried something. Now you know something about yourself.” – Amy Poehler
Back during my first solo travel journey in 1994, it was tough to find guide books strictly for solo female travelers. I had read plenty of travel memoirs, but resource guides for women were few and far between. Online resources for travelers didn’t exist back then. Finding information for women travelers was even more difficult in those days. I did all of my trip research at the library and at the book store.
Around six or seven years ago, I met a young woman by the name of Kristin Addis at a Reach To Teach event in Taipei. We struck up an acquaintance that evening, and when Kristin approached me about wanting to write for My Several Worlds about a year later, I couldn’t say no.
Shortly thereafter, she launched Be My Travel Muse, quit her corporate job, sold everything and went on the road. Kristin is the perfect example of a fearless, confident woman and she is setting a fantastic example for women around the world who want to travel, but have never had the courage to follow their dreams.
Kristin has compiled everything she learned into her new how-to travel guide called Conquering Mountains: How To Solo Travel The World Fearlessly. Her book takes the most stressful parts of traveling solo and streamlines it into an easy to follow format for anyone to use. This is a terrific travel guide for first time travelers who are looking for that something extra to help them get over the fear of getting started and following through on their journey.
She has also included 15 other established female travelers to contribute advice to her guide AND six in-depth case study interviews from female travelers.
I am really honored to be one of the female travelers that she contacted for advice.
I also really love the quotes from strong and inspiring women that she places throughout the travel guide. Her opening quote is from Amelia Earhart. I can’t think of a better example of a fearless adventurer!
Kristin also includes advice on learning how to get over the fear of traveling alone, building self-confidence and dealing with critics, tips for saving money for your adventure, additional advice for making money while you’re on the road, and banking advice. There’s also a great section on planning for your trip that covers everything from ticketing and budgeting advice to healthcare, safety advice and packing lists.
Conquering Mountains: How To Solo Travel the World Fearlessly is a terrific travel resource guide that will give you the tools to plan your trip from start to finish.
Buy it and read it.
You won’t be disappointed.
