Bus Scams in Chau Doc, Vietnam

Making our way into Vietnam from Cambodia was not as easy as we thought it would be. We expected to find taxis once we had made our way across the Vietnamese border. Instead, we found half a dozen motorbike drivers lounging in the shade of a giant tree. We took one look at them and knew we were going to get gouged. There wasn’t another soul in sight. We were already marked for the day. They wanted $16 US to Continue Reading →

A Remote Border Crossing in Cambodia and Vietnam

April mornings in Cambodia get hot really fast. We were standing on a dusty road in Cambodia waiting for our hired car to arrive and take us from Sihanoukville to the Chau Doc border crossing at Kaam Samnor, Cambodia/Ving Xuong, Vietnam on the Mekong River. Our driver was late as to be expected. Everything works on its own time in South East Asia. Continue Reading →

Journey through the Cambodian Countryside

After three days of scrambling over the ruins of Angkor’s ancient temples we set off on the next leg of our journey through Cambodia. We decided to continue our journey through Cambodia by land, despite having a rather rough entry into the country at the Aranyaprathet/Poipet border crossing. As far as land border crossings go, the most interesting, and certainly the strangest one I’ve ever been to is the Thailand/Cambodia land border at Aranyaprathet/Poipet. There seem to be a number of scams running at this border as well. For a complete listing of scams to date, I’d recommend visiting Tales of Asia for a current update of road conditions and scams to be aware Continue Reading →

Land Border Bus Scam from Thailand to Cambodia

Land border crossings are a pain in my butt. And the granddaddy of them all has got to be the Aranyaprathet/Poipet crossing between Thailand and Cambodia. Most people who cross at this border are heading to Siem Reap. Beware the Khao San Road Bus Scam! Khao San Road bus tickets are a complete rip-off. It doesn’t seem to matter whether you buy a cheap or expensive ticket, once you are out of Thailand and into Cambodia, the gloves are off Continue Reading →
