Ah I live in Xi'an, thanks for the wonderful post. I've actually tried all these places here, it's hard to find the names of some of the food that you try here when you first arrive though =) .-= Shaza´s last blog ..Initial =-.

Hi Dan,
The Muslim Quarter was my favorite part of Xi’an as well. And yes, we made the same observation about the air quality in Xi’an. We were there during the winter. I can’t imagine what it’s like during the summer heat.

Xi’an is a great city to visit–the people were more friendly there than most places in China. I had a difficult conversation with a woman in the Muslim Quarter because my Chinese at the time was very limited, but she was patient and tried to understand my poor language skills. Also got to talk to some bartenders in the empty bars (no idea why all the bars I visited were empty).

I don’t recall paying anything to get on the city wall. Amazing that very few people take advantage of getting up there–every photo I’ve seen has no people. I’m also told that the Imam at the Great Mosque speaks English (wish I knew that when I visited).

Ah, I remember the Muslim quarter being my favourite part of Xi’an. Especially eating tasty buckwheat noodles from little restaurants tucked down back alleys! Once negative I remember about the city was the crazy amount of airborne pollutants though; I recall being covered in soot after hiking around day after day!

How long are you going to be in China and what’s on your travel itinerary? You should think about meeting up with Graham. I bet he’d be a great personal tour guide!
