Jim Shan is a fifteen year old student, who has been studying at Gram English School for several years. This is the first of many personal narratives that Jim has written over the last three months in Super Writers. I think he’s a natural born writer. He never fails to make me laugh.
“Poo-Poo Cake”
Wow! Time flies so fast. One year goes and another comes. My birthday is here again, but there’s still one birthday that is clear in my mind.
The birthday cake is the most important part of my birthday, because my Mom always buys a big cake for me. Every time I eat birthday cake, I think of what happened when I was seven years old.
It happened on March 1st, 1989. It was a wonderful day. Everything looked great because it was my birthday. I was excited because my Mom had prepared a big cake for celebrating. She put it in the refrigerator and I would open the door and look at it every once in awhile. I don’t especially love cake, but when children see cakes, they become very excited.
I waited and waited. Finally the sky became dark. Mom asked me to take a shower before we ate. While I was taking a shower and getting changed, my grandpa took the cake out of the box and cut the ribbon. I was really excited when I came out of my bedroom. My brother was excited too. He ran towards the cake to get a dish and fork and as he was running, he fell and pushed the cake on the floor.
“Noooooooooo!” I shouted. But it was too late. The cake was ‘poo-poo.’ Both my brother and I cried. I cried for my cake. My brother cried because he had made a big mess. Mom asked us not to cry and picked the ‘poo-poo’ cake up to make a cake mountain. We smiled because the cake mountain looked so funny. Mom took a picture for me. My aunt bought a new cake for me several days later.
Now I am fifteen. When I think about it, it’s an experience I know I’ll never forget.

Hi Carrie,
n thats no wonder as they are learning from you.
Just wanted to tell you that I enjoy reading stories from the Super Writers. Honestly they makes me feel embarrassed when I read the kind of stuff they write n read what I write on blog. They are obviously much better writer than me
Hope to read more from them.
Hi Ashish,
Thanks for the postive feedback. I’m not sure who’s reading these stories at the moment as they’re so new. I’m glad people are enjoying them. I hope these posts bring a little happiness and a sense of accomplishment to the students who contribute their stories and ideas.
I’ve read two stories which are written by your students. I’m full of admiration for their writing skills. I’ve been studying English for 5 years and I wish my skills were equally good. Sometimes it’s very hard to express something in second language.
I’ve got the same opinion as Ashish – hope to read more from them.
I think these writing posts are a great idea for your class. I was very impressed with Jim’s contribution. Great job Jim!
Hi K.
They’ve been studying as long as you, but the difference between your writing and theirs lies in the writing course they’re taking. They’re forced to write for a minimum of two solid hours each week.
The finished result you see here takes three or four re-writes with loads of guidance, suggestions, revising and editing work involved. I’m sure your skills are just as good. Why don’t you send me something and let me take a look at it? We can work together on it if you’re up for the challenge.
Sandy,
I’m glad people are enjoying these stories. I get to laugh and cry over what they write every week and I’m not anywhere close to being tired of the amount of grading and corrections that need to be made.
Usually I get loads of laughs. I save Jim’s stories for last because he always has something funny to say, but today one of them submitted a story about his grandfather passing away. What a tear-jerker!
At this point, the world is their oyster. They’re writing about anything and everything they can think of without fear of being judged. I feel quite honored that they feel they can share such personal stories with me.
On the other hand, when I see stories like Jim’s, it makes me excited to be sharing them with my online friends and family back home.
