A New Camera For Ms. Globetrotter

Finally! After months of anticipation and saving, I finally bought my new camera, hence the lack of blogging this weekend. I’m sure you can guess what I’m preoccupied with at the moment.

I’ve spent the last two months lurking around photography sites, camera review sites and blogs to get as much information as possible. Some sites that I have found helpful are:

Digital Photography Review

Digital Photography School

Canon EOS 400D

Canon Lens Review

Let’s Go Digital Nikon SLR Reviews

After looking at several Nikon and Canon models, I finally narrowed it down to the Nikon D80 and the Canon XTi Digital Rebel 400D . John and I headed to the camera shops in Taipei last weekend to do some snooping around. By the end of last weekend, I decided that the Canon 400D is exactly what I’m looking for.

Heaps of thanks go out to Craig Ferguson, Steve Peer and Lisa Bettany, who have all given me invaluable advice over the past couple of weeks. Craig, in particular, has been extra-helpful with numerous emails on his side. Thanks very very much for your patience and input.

I made my purchase this weekend after making a complete gear list for myself. My lucky red envelope money also came in handy as I was able to purchase an extra lens with the kit.

I’m the proud owner of a Canon XTi Digital Rebel 400D. I bought the kit and then added: a battery grip, 4G CF card, 2 batteries, UV filters and heavy-duty camera bag to the pile. I also picked up a Canon EF55 f1.8/ II lens as my first ultra light-weight lens for travel photography. I managed to get the store to throw in a few freebies. They gave me an LCD screen protector, a cleaning kit and an extra battery for no extra charge.

John and I are in the midst of planning our next trip. We depart on Saturday with new camera in tow, so you’ll have to wait until we get back to see what I come up. Our trip details will follow later this week. I want to build a little suspense before we go. It’s gonna be a great trip though!

First the suspense of whether or not you’re going to go DSLR… then the suspense of whether you’ll go Canon or Nikon… then you don’t post the pics you took after your first weekend spin with your new camera, and now to top it all off, you don’t include where your going for your next trip in this entry…

    You’re killing me! :)

Congrats, on your new baby, Ms Globetotter. There is a learning curve with DSLRs. The different metering modes are challenging. I’ll drop you an email and suggest some reading material when I return (Sunday).

Have fun, don’t get discouraged. It took me a lot of playing a round to turn out anything I thought was acceptable.

    Walter,

I just checked out your photography on Flickr. It’s wonderful! If these are the kind of photographs I can produce with my new camera, I’m doubly happy I bought it. I also added you as a contact. Terrific work my friend!

Ha Todd. I know. I’m terrible, aren’t I? Actually, we’ve been crazy busy over the past month, so I haven’t had much time to post. However, if the suspense keeps people coming back….. ;-)

Thanks ladies. I hope I don’t do too badly with the new camera. I’ve been so busy this week that I haven’t had much time to get out and practice. I guess I’ll get plenty of practice over the next week. I think it’s going to be awhile though. :-)

    Lisa,

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. I can’t wait to see what kind of photos I start producing. I haven’t had much time to play around with it this week, but I’m officially on vacation now. Once we get back from the trip, I’m hooking up with Joanna to filch loads of top-notch tips from her as well.
