With all the hype surrounding the latest Harry Potter book and movie, my students seem to be talking about nothing else. I’ve used this conversation lesson over the past week to generate team spirit and conversation in English. My advanced junior high school students haven’t stopped talking about it! Time: 2 hours. It depends on [...]

Chángbáishan is a volcanic mountain located in Jilin Province, China. Straddling the Chinese/Korean border, Mount Chang Bai is a popular tourist destination for travelers to Northeast China. Locals will attest that a pilgrimage to Chángbáishan should be made between the end of June and August for those who want to view Heavenly Lake, the mirror-like volcanic lake nestled in a crater at the summit of Changbaishan.

One of the local attractions in Siem Reap is the Angkor Wat Miniature Garden. Scupltor Dy Preung has created miniature replicas of Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei, Bayon and several other Angkorian temples and sculptures out of cement. In addition to these magnificent creations, there are also other figures in stonework. Angkor Wat. For $1 American, [...]

Recent weather activity in Taipei and Banciao have produced some unexpectedly clear and dazzling blue skies over the last few days. You can feel the change in the air when a typhoon is approaching. The winds gather up and blow the pollution out and away. The air is super-charged. It smells fresh and clean. I [...]

A young boy waits patiently for travelers to finish with their plastic drinking bottles. As far as land border crossings go, the most interesting, and certainly the strangest one I’ve ever been to is the Thailand/Cambodia land border at Aranyaprathet/Poipet. There seem to be a number of scams running at this border as well. For [...]

Most people who cross at this border are heading to Siem Reap. Beware the Khao San Road Bus Scam! Khao San Road bus tickets are a complete rip-off. It [...]

I can hear for the first time in years. No really. I’m being completely serious! And it’s all because of a doctor here in Taiwan. One of the major annoyances of living abroad is getting sick. I’m sure everyone will agree it can be quite stressful when you have to go to the doctor’s office [...]

Phnom Bakheng was built on a natural rise of 230 feet sometime during the 9th century. Also known as “Strong Hill,” is accessible by a steep stairway and by the Elephant path, which starts off on the left of the stairway. The stairway has been reduced to rubble, hence most visitors opt to visit the [...]

The distinctive five towers and colored domes of the Taipei City Sky Dome (????????) have become a landmark in Banciao. Generally, the air is too smoggy to see much of interest by day, but the wind from an approaching storm blew the thick layer of pollution away to reveal a surprisingly clear skyline today. We [...]
