The Reach To Teach Team. Season 2
We spent the day at Riverside Park in Yonghe for John’s last game of flag football with the Reach To Teach team. After the hard rain last night, the field conditions were terrible and we had to pick our way through a muddy, wet field when we arrived. It made for an interesting day of slipping and sliding around by all the players in Taiwan’s American Flag Football Association. Even players with cleats were doing picturesque face plants and nose dives into the soft, grass and giant mud puddles.
I enjoy these Sunday excursions and have started to become ‘one of those’ girlfriends. You know, the ones who get all riled up when their men are being treated unfairly. There was one guy on the opposing team who I could have cheerfully throttled. I think he thought he was playing rugby, not flag football. He was overly aggressive and he pulled a lot of cheap shots today with several of the players on our team. Even the other teams were making fun of him. He was really aggressive with John, but then again, most men are when they see him on the field. It must have something to do with testosterone. Guys see John’s 6′9 frame and something inside snaps.
Today’s game against The Untouchables was a particularly hard game to ref because these two teams HATE each other. The amount of tension on the field affected all the players and most of the spectators were pretty wound up, myself included. Despite their best efforts today, RTT lost the game, even though they played better than The Untouchables. Today was their first defeat in ages and I feel a little sad that John wasn’t able to leave on a high note.
