I love photography. I’m not very good at it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a healthy appreciation for it. These top five photographers deserve the award for making my heart sing this month.
TOP TAIWAN PHOTOGRAPHY:
Andres Photoblog features some terrific photography on Taiwan. This should be a standard blogroll addition for any serious lover of all things Taiwanese.
I ALSO ENJOYED :
Lisa Bettany’s Flight series. Lisa is a talented Canadian photographer and writer. A friend of mine actually called me on the phone to tell me about Lisa’s site.
Jo Rees’ black and white photos from Thailand give us a break from digital photography and remind us once again that plain old film is just as rewarding and produces fantastic results. Jo, where can I buy?
Macro Art In Nature This American photographer and fellow Wordpress blogger produces magnificent macro photos in nature.

Hello fellow photography aficionado. I’m in a quest to buy a new digital camera. My budget is between $200 and $240. I like taking pictures while on vacation or simply when I want to capture a sweet memory or an unforgettable scene. I don’t know any specifics on cameras but I know well enough the cheap ones at Wal-Mart do me no good! Lol…Do you have any advice or can you recommend one?
I am considering getting one direct from Panasonic (I receive a company discount).
Your help is greatly appreciated!
-Diana
wow… thank you! i’m really not any good… i just love to take random photos of random things. in fact, my wife was just complaining to me that whenever we go out, i spend more time looking for things to photograph and/or photographing things than spend time with her. as you said, i just love photography.
Andres,
You’re too modest. I think your photography is fantastic and your love for it shines through in your photos. I especially like Hangover Fishing. I can’t tell you why. It just really appeals to me.
Hi Diana,
As I mentioned before, I’m not a professional photographer. I only wish my photography could be as good as the people that I mentioned in my post. I just like taking pictures.
Right now I use a Canon Digital IXUS 65. It’s a sweet little camera. It’s ultra compact, takes great pictures and really requires no effort at all. Plus, it has a huge LCD screen on the back, which is what drew me to it in the first place. I like the idea of being able to play a slideshow without a computer. Then only thing I don’t like about it is the zoom. It’s alright, but it’s not awesome.
If you’re talking about getting into some serious camera equipment, you should contact my friend, Jo Rees. I provided her link in my post. Or you can contact her husband Range. Range just wrote an article a few days about his thoughts on DSLR cameras and he really knows his stuff. Here’s the link to his article http://range.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/my-thoughts-on-dslr-cameras/
Good luck!
thanks so much!
hey Carrie,
This is your nutty co-worker.
I too have a new Canon and love it. It’s super easy to use. I don’t think that DulceDiana can get the models we have in the US or Canada. I am pretty sure that the one you have is an Asia/Euro version of the “Powershot” series. i know the one I have is made for the Japanese market.
Don’t quote me on this stuff, but I am pretty sure.
Take care Carrie. I hope you are feeling better and I’ll see you tomorrow in the salt mines…lol.
-David
Hey Carrie,
Thanks for mentioning my photos from Thailand. Lisa Bettany’s Flight series is fantastic and I will definitely have to check out the work of Andres.
Hi David,
You’re right and I totally forgot to include it. I meant to, so thanks for reminding me.
Correct me if I’m wrong. The Canon IXUS65 is the equivalent of the Canon Powershot SD630.
Consider the megapixel count and the optical zoom. Most cameras will offer a digital zoom, but they aren’t as good as optical ones.
At that price, I would consider checking out ebay for some nice deals. Personally, I like the Canon point and shoot cameras. They got some sweet models out there, including 10MP and ISO going up to 3200. But those are pretty expensive.
For point and shoot cameras, you need to decide which way you want to go: supercompact or larger with more features.
I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-P93 5.1MP point and shoot (it’s actually Jo’s) and it has served us well. It has taken a lot of pictures and I developed my eye using this little camera.
Things you can will probably have to go without: large screens, accelerometers (change the orientation of you camera and the image switches sides as well), touchscreens.
But these things don’t make you take better pictures. They are nice to have, but are just fun. I have a 2.5inch screen on my Nikon D200 DSLR that I rarely use. I just take pictures and look at them on my computer. I rarely use the screen to look at pics.
At your budget, you can find a 6.1 to 8MP camera on ebay. Most of them are almost new.
You can also look at http://www.dpreview.com to check out which cameras are rated the best.
Carrie,
yes, one of the powershot SD series, not sure.
i have been perusing a few other Taiwan-related blogs and noticed one of them is recommending camera stuff that costs well over $500…that’s freaking crazy.
you can spend about $300 and get a more than adequate camera. we both spent around that price range and check out all the nifty shots you’ve taken…
i suppose if it makes you feel better about yourself, go right ahead and spend the bucks…i think you and I have done just fine with our point and shoot technique.

Thanks for speedlinking me lovely lady!
PS Still pontificating on my buffy answers… it’s not easy to pick favourites… I love them all.
@David it depends what you want to do with your camera. You can get good point and shoots for 200 to 300 USD without any problems.
Hi Lisa,
My pleasure. Your pictures brighten every morning for me. I had a horrible time picking my faves on Buffy. There are so many great episodes to take into consideration and I’m sure once we start gabbing about them, I’ll change my answers!
Range,
Can you recommend some good point and shoot digis within this price range?
