John and I have been together for awhile. While we were in China, we did a lot of things together with our friends. Since our move to Taiwan, we’ve backed away from an overly abundant social life and have started to branch out and enjoy the finer things in life on our own.
Some might say we see too much of each other. Since we work and live together, we are rarely out of each other’s sight for very long. Despite all the time we spend together, he never says no, even when I ask him to take me to flower festivals, butterfly parks and peacock farms. He still brings me flowers and takes me on good old-fashioned dinner and movie dates.
Sometimes we’ll go to Warner Village (also known as Vue Cinemas) if we want to have more of an American style date night. There are loads of great restuarants in the area. Plus, I love the flashiness and bright lights of Warner Village. There always seems to be something going on there. I like wandering through all the designer shops, walking along the overhead walkways and looking at all the lights and street performers. It’s like stepping into an American city for a few hours. Tickets are a little pricier and parking can be a pain in the butt, but I still think it’s worth it.
Since it was raining last night, we decided to see 300 at Globo Mall in Yonghe. Globo Mall is closer to home and we don’t have to deal with any crowds. Plus, the movie last night was my choice and we didn’t think we’d be able to get decent show times to see 300 at Warner Village. I practically had to drag him to see it. I couldn’t understand why he didn’t want to see it, because everyone has been going ga-ga over it lately. After reading Mu’s comments on it on Taoyuan Nights and taking a look at the trailer, I was sold. Anyways, the movie is great. It’s sheer, unadulterated madness and we loved it. John was hooked within minutes and I’m patting myself on the back today for suggesting a movie that he actually liked.
300 is written by Frank Miller, the same guy who wrote Sin City. It has the same crazy eye-popping visuals and it’s heavy on the battle scenes. I didn’t mind the next to nothing costume designs on any of the warriors either. There are freaks and monsters of every kind, although I’m not sure how much historical detail in the movie is true. Maybe it’s not the best movie to take your girlfriend to, but I didn’t have any complaints. I love a good action flick and 300 delivered. So all in all, we had a great date.

I’m surprised you had to drag him out.
I enjoyed it, Jo wouldn’t watch it. I have read the graphic novel on which it is based. It’s very good and the movie captures the feel of it very nicely.
I loved 300! Saw it at the Imax with Doug, we both thought the special effects were incredible. Did you know that technology was invented by a Cdn film company? We can all be proud. XOXS
I live and work with my boyfriend (Ryland) as well. Even when we are not physically in the same room we are connected via ichat. Nerds? Yes. Both of us. And it’s fabulous.
What I’ve learnt from living with another nerd is that “girl nerds” and “guy nerds” are different. Both lovely in their own ways, but growing up, I was never really fond of comic books, graphic novels, or movies with excessive violence before. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I didn’t go to all the Lord of the Rings movies, or devour every Harry Potter books/movies, but before Ry, I had never seen the Robert Rodriguez Mariachi/Desperado/Once upon a time… trilogy, and I didn’t really understand the hype of comics. I liked my Renoir paintings, and yes, butterflies, and intense dramas starring Matt Damon. But after watching movies like “Sin City”, “Dusk til Dawn”,”Gladiator”.. even the first 2 “Blade” movies, I have been jolted into a whole new world. And it’s pretty cool.
Now I am fully schooled in the comic book nerd world as Ryland seems to know every plot line/origin story of every superhero/ine. He loves Frank Miller and Gladiator things and cannot wait to go to 300. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to catch it this week.
Sarah,
I’m glad to hear there’s another sista’ out there who agrees with me about 300. It is super cool. I really liked the heavy metal music blaring through all the battle scenes too.
Lisa,
I’ll be waiting to hear your thoughts and comments on 300 when you and Ryland go. If you liked all the above mentioned movies, I guarantee you’ll be entranced by 300. It will dazzle your eyes!
I hate to admit it, but I love these down and dirty movies. They’re remnants from old school dayz with my best bud, Drew. Tuesday nights always included a Buffy episode and a super gross out film or high action flick. Im more apt to sit and watch these movies then John, who still displays a little shock that I find it so fascinating. I don’t watch TV much, (Grey’s Anatomy and Lost are it) so I really get into my movies when I have the time.
Range,
I had to drag him out because he honestly didn’t know anything about it! He’s pretty intent on Ghost Rider though. If you have the novel here in Taiwan, I’d definitely be interested in borrowing it!
I don’t have 300 in Taiwan, it’s with my comics in Canada. But it’s a lot better than Ghost Rider. You can check out my review on GR, there is nothing great about that movie.
300 is really cool and entertaining.
I’ll admit it…
I own all 7 seasons of Buffy and 5 seasons of Angel on DVD. I have watched them about 10 times. True.
Sometimes when I’m having the worst day imaginable, I watch my favourite episodes of Buffy and everything feels *ok* After so many viewings I actually feel like the Scoobies are my friends. If only…
PS Also a big fan of Lost and Grey’s. Own them. Love them. Have you seen Alias (also a J J Abrams production)? The first season is grand.
Lisa,
I think we might have been seperated at birth! I own all the Buffy and Angel season on DVD too. I haul ‘em out when I need some ‘me’ time.
I also own all the seasons of Alias – Jennifer Garner is a total ass-kicker. I love her in that show. I’m so sad it’s over.
We must be! It’s so exciting to meet another uber Buffy/Angel fan. I love it!
So I must ask you:
1. Angel or Spike?
2. Favourite season of Buffy?
3. Giles or Wesley?
4. Feelings on Dawn?
5. Top 3 episodes?
I could talk about Buffy all day and night. I owe a lot to Buffy, including meeting Ryland. The first words I said to him were: “You like Buffy too?!?”
And Sydney Bristow… totally kick ass. I was sad to part with her, but I’m glad she got a happy ending.
i saw it a few days ago and it was just awesome! my adrenalin was still pumping after the movie, i really just wanted to grab my umbrella and start spearing the crowd in the hallway and clear a path to the exit like i was leonidas. speaking of which, dude was just too cool… i so ready to name my future son leonidas.
I wonder if we’re going to see a rise in boys named Leonidas after this movie? I wouldn’t doubt it. I was totally stoked after seeing the movie too. I suggested going back again for a second round, but everyone things I’m a little silly. Whatevs. I’ll go on my own instead!
Hi Lisa,
I think we’re going to have to start a club on Facebook. There’s just too many good things about these shows to list them all here.
OK. Let’s see.
Angel or Spike? It’s so hard to decide. Angel is so bleeding heart sometimes, it kills me. But I kinda like it about him too. Spike is the man, especially in the last season with the you know what and the Hellmouth. If you’re asking which one Buffy should be with, I’d say Angel hands down.
Favorite Season of Buffy? Season 3 when Faith shows up. But I also like the end of Season 6 and Season 7 when Willow goes all bad-ass.
Giles or Wesley? Giles.
Feelings on Dawn? Eh.
Top 3 Episodes? “Villians” “Hush” and “Amends” I think. There’s just too many to choose from.
What do you say about this? I actually named one of my classes in China after Buffy characters. Spike, Willow, Angel, Xander, Anya, Cordelia, Giles, Wesley, Dawn…..isn’t that terrible?
Awesome.
I will compile my answers and post them asap. I wish you lived here so we could have a Buffy night. There IS so much to talk about. It never gets old for me…
Lisa,
To be sure, I’d be hustling right over. We WILL have a Buffy night!
I think I went to the wrong edition…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNqiSkd1M6k
