Taiwan is truly THE scooter nation of the world. It has more scooters per capital than anywhere else in the world and is the most popular mode of transportation in Taiwan by far. The roar of scooters has become a song for the road. It’s inescapable, as is the amount of air pollution they cause.
With an extremely high density of motorized vehicles, Taiwan also belches out a high ratio of carbon emissions making Taipei world famous for its high levels of air pollution. It’s obvious the millions of scooters, motorcycles and vehicles on the roads in Taiwan are the primary cause of urban air pollution and cause an enormous amount of environmental damage, most notably in Taipei.
The city is surrounded by mountains and effectively traps air pollutants. It’s so bad, most drivers wear a scarf or mask around their nose and mouth to help guard against the noxious fumes. To solve the serious environmental issues that scooters and motorcycles cause, there is an urgent need to develop new technology to lessen the effects of air pollution in Taiwan.
One option is fuel cell technology. Introducing a hydrogen vehicle to the streets of Taiwan would mean less air and noise pollution. Needless to say, I sincerely hope that an alternative method of personal transportation is introduced quickly to the streets of Taiwan.
While I can’t claim to know anything of importance about fuel cell technology, I can and will state the need and urgency for an alternative and environmentally safe method of personal transportation in Taiwan. Something needs to be done to lessen the effects of harmful air pollutants and it needs to happen fast.
